Understand what the Commissioner's Cup is, the WNBA "cup"
Tournament "interrupts" the regular season of the women's basketball league
From June 1 to 13, the WNBA regular season will be interrupted for the Commissioner's Cup. It is a kind of cup between the 12 teams in the league with the aim of serving as an extra preparation. In addition, it also provides for a special prize and donations to charities.
What is the Commissioner's Cup?
As previously stated, the Commissioner's Cup is a competition that has been taking place since 2021. The idea is to recover rivalries between the Western Conference and the WNBA Eastern Conference, something that happened until the 2015 playoffs. After this period, the league adopted a general classification format, largely due to the number of teams that play in the women's basketball league.
In its fourth edition, the Commissioner's Cup has a system that takes advantage of games already scheduled by the WNBA to count in the tournament as well. Thus, there are 30 games between June 1st and 13th, in which each team plays five games, one against each of the conference rivals. As a result, the teams that take first place in their respective conferences will compete for $500,000 on June 25.
Awards and action for charity
The Commissioner's Cup also arose from the need to support causes, actions, and non-profit organizations that help humanity. As the WNBA already has a very positive track record regarding social positioning, teams and players are always using their voices to spread information, serve as spokespeople and make donations. In 2024, the "W Cup" is sponsored by Coinbase, a company that reiterates the duty of collective and social actions in the United States. As a result of the partnership, it will serve as a platform for raising amounts for conversion into donations.
Which teams have already been champions of the "copinha"?
The first WNBA Commissioner's Cup champion was the Seattle Storm in 2021. Against the Connecticut Sun, the team won by 79 to 57. Subsequently, in 2022, the Las Vegas Aces beat the Chicago Sky by 93 to 83 and won the trophy. Recently, in 2023, it was the New York Liberty's turn to lift the cup after applying a score of 82 to 63 over the Las Vegas Aces.
